What does the County Audit Department do?

County Audit is an independent, objective, assurance, and consulting activity designed to add value and improve the Clerk of Court & Comptroller's and the Board of County Commissioners' organizations. The mission of the County Audit Department is to serve the citizens and taxpayers of Hillsborough County. County Audit helps the organizations accomplish their objectives by bringing a systematic, disciplined approach to evaluate and improve the effectiveness of risk management, control, and governance processes.

The County Audit Department conducts audits in accordance with the Generally Accepted Government Auditing Standards and the International Standards for the Professional Practice of Internal Auditing. The County Audit Department undergoes an External Quality Assessment every five years to assess the department’s conformity to these standards and to evaluate the department’s effectiveness in carrying out its mission. The most recent assessment was completed September 2014 and determined that the County Audit Department was in conformance with all applicable standards.

What is an audit?

An audit is an independent examination of the controls, procedures and finances of an organization or organizational unit. The County Audit Director prepares an audit work plan for each fiscal year. This plan includes departments, agencies, programs and functions to be audited. The plan is developed based on the County Audit Departments annual risk assessment with input from the Board of County Commissioners and County Administration. The plan is approved by the Clerk of Court & Comptroller.
