Traffic Department

The Traffic Department maintains all records and collects payments pertaining to traffic tickets/citations issued in Hillsborough County and all parking tickets issued by law enforcement agencies outside the Tampa City limits in Hillsborough County.
 

Civil Traffic Violations

Any non-mandatory appearance civil traffic ticket/citation issued after March 1, 2017 has been automatically granted a 30 calendar day payment extension and you MUST respond within 60 calendar days (local administrative order S-2017-018).

NOTE: Failure to respond within this time period will result in additional fees and the suspension of your driving privileges.

Varying Fine Amounts from Ticket/Citation

The financial amount indicated on the ticket/citation and the amount you are responsible to pay may differ due to late fees or the issuing officer’s error. Notwithstanding the amount indicated on the face of the ticket/citation, the Clerk’s Office is required to collect the statutory amount. You can verify the amount due on your ticket/citation online.

Option 1 - Pay Civil Penalty and Elect Traffic School

Step 1 - Confirm Eligibility

You can elect to attend a State of Florida approved traffic school course at the time of payment in order to avoid having points entered on your driving record.  You are eligible if:
  • You have not elected to attend traffic school within the past 12 months.
  • You have not elected to attend traffic school five times within your lifetime.
  •  You do not have a Commercial Drivers License.
  •  You were not in a Commercial Motor Vehicle at the time of the offense.
  •  You may not elect Traffic School for tickets/citations related to license tag, vehicle registration, driver license or failure to carry/show insurance violations

Your election to attend Traffic School should be in writing and accompany your payment. Visit us online to verify the amount due on your citation. Payments for Traffic Citations may be made by personal/cashier checks or money orders with the citation number written on them and submitted by mail.

Step 3 - Attend School

Within 60 days of electing traffic school, you must attend one of the traffic schools listed on the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles website or check your local yellow pages. The traffic school enrollment fee is in addition to any statutory fees for the violation.

Step 4 - Submit Certificate

After you have completed traffic school, you must provide a copy of the completion certificate to our office so we can update your record to indicate you have complied with the statute. You have multiple options to submit:

Once you have elected to attend traffic school, failure to complete or submit a certificate will result in the suspension of your driver’s license, points being assessed to your record, and imposition of additional costs.

Civil Citations Requiring Proof

Option 1 – Dismissal (Proof Valid at Time of Offense)


Citations requiring proof may be dismissed for $10 with valid proof at the time of offense.

Option 2 - Pay Civil Penalty (Proof Valid after Offense)


Citations requiring proof may be paid with valid proof after the time of offense for full amount of the civil penalty. Visit us online to verify the amount due on your citation.  If you are unable to provide proof as the vehicle has been sold, stolen, destroyed, or it is not your vehicle, you must complete a Waiver of Security/Proof with payment.

Criminal Traffic Violations

Criminal Traffic Violation includes but is not limited to DUI, Driving with a Suspended License, Driving without a Valid Driver's License           
If you are charged with a criminal traffic violation you will be notified via U.S. mail of your arraignment date.  If you bonded out of jail, your bondsman will be notified as well.  All notices will be sent to the address listed on the citation.          
It is the defendant's responsibility to keep the Clerk's Office informed of his/her correct mailing address.  If your mailing address changes, please complete the Change of Contact Information form and mail to the Clerk's Office.           
 NOTE: Failure to appear at your appointed court session could result in a warrant for your arrest.  If previously arrested for the citation, you may also forfeit any bond you have posted, thus losing money or collateral.

Includes but not limited to speeding over 30mph, certain commercial motor vehicle offenses, civil citations issued as a result of Serious Bodily Injury or Fatality.
If you are charged with a mandatory traffic violation you will be notified via U.S. mail of your arraignment date.
All notices will be sent to the address listed on the citation.  It is the defendant's responsibility to keep the Clerk's Office informed of his/her correct mailing address.

Driving History

You may view information for obtaining your driver history/transcript at the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles.  You may also visit any Clerk's Traffic Office location to purchase your driver history/transcript. 

Traffic School

Florida Statute 318.14 allows for this option and may be used once in a 12 month period and no more than 5 times in a lifetime.  Any person who holds a Commercial Driver's License (CDL), is not eligible to elect the driving school option.           

For those that qualify and complete school:
Adjudication is withheld on your record
Points will not be assessed.

NOTE: If you are requesting a court date after the initial 30 days, late and suspended fees must be paid prior to a court date being scheduled.  Per Florida Statute 318.15, civil infractions cannot be scheduled for court after 180 days from the date upon which the citation was issued.

How do I elect school?

Florida Statute 318.14 allows for this option and may only be used once in a 12 month period and no more than 5 times in a lifetime.  Any person who holds a Commercial Driver's License (CDL), or was driving a Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) is not eligible to elect the driving school option.

By electing this option:  (For those that qualify and complete school)

How do I obtain a copy of my driving record?

The Clerk's Office can assist you if your driver's license is suspended for failure to pay a traffic citation or to attend a defensive driving school for a Hillsborough County citation.  We will inform you of any requirements including any additional costs that may be applicable.  However, if it is suspended for any other reasons, you will need to contact your local Driver's License Office.

To obtain this information you may purchase a copy of your driving record from any Clerk's Traffic Office location.

If you have questions regarding points, please contact your local driver's license office (DHSMV).

  • 3 year record - $14.25 and $1.00 for each additional page
  • Full record - $16.25 and $1.00 for each additional page
  • No record found - $8.25

Can I request a payment extension?

Civil traffic citations issued after 03/01/2017 and not requiring a mandatory court appearance must be paid within 60 days from issuance.  These citations have already been granted an automatic single thirty day payment extension.  Any future extension of the payment date must be approved by the court.   

NOTE: The citation must be paid by the extended due date to avoid additional fees and the suspension of your driver's license.            

 

Can I enter a no contest plea?

Florida Statute 318.14 allows for this option and may only be used once in a 12 month period and no more than 3 times in your lifetime.  Any person who holds a Commercial Driver's License (CDL), is not eligible for this election.

Citations received for the following offenses may elect to enter a plea of no contest:

  • Expired Driver's License
  • Expired Tag
  • No Insurance
  • Driving with suspended driver's license without knowledge

By electing this option:

  • Adjudication is withheld
  • Points will not be assessed

No Contest Plea and proof of compliance must be submitted at time of payment.

How do I rectify a proof citation?

Submit Proof with Dismissal.  Florida Statute 318.18 allows for proof to be submitted with a $10 dismissal fee for the following offenses:

How are cash bond refunds processed?

Effective July 31, 2017 the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office will continue to collect the cash bonds posted on behalf of the defendant, but will transmit the monies to the Clerk of the Circuit Court (Clerk). The Clerk will be responsible for processing the distribution of the cash bonds post disposition.  More information is available in the Cash Bond Depositor Instructions.
