Domestic Violence Month

Domestic Violence Awareness Month

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and the Clerk’s Office is partnering with The Spring of Tampa Bay, Hillsborough County’s only certified domestic violence center, to raise public awareness about this pressing problem in our community.

Every year, the Clerk’s Office processes about 6,600 applications for domestic violence restraining orders. Sadly, domestic violence does not take a break for the holidays. Our clerks, along with employees of The Spring who have been deputized, process restraining order applications seven days a week, 365 days a year.

To ease the burden of this process, the Clerk’s Office made improvements in recent months at the domestic violence office at the George Edgecomb Courthouse in downtown Tampa. The office was expanded and applicants are automatically registered to allow them to view records online so they do not have to return to the courthouse to keep up with the progress of their applications.

We are encouraging our employees to wear purple ribbons during October to promote awareness of domestic violence. We will also place posters in some of our offices to promote public awareness of domestic violence.

The Spring also plans a series of events in October around the theme of “Peace in Purple” and we encourage everyone to participate if possible.

  • October 6, 2016 – Day of Caring with United Way.  Groups will volunteer at The Spring Boutique, 3816 W Swann Avenue in Tampa or you can donate goods to the store. The Spring is also looking for 10-15 volunteers to assist in painting its administration and school building in mid to late October.
  • October 21, 2016 – Ruth’s Chris Lunch. A $25 donation gets you lunch at Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse, with a portion of the proceeds benefitting The Spring.
  • October 26, 2016 – 26th Annual Gift of Peace Luncheon at the Tampa Convention Center.
